2025 ASCE Gulf Coast Regional Student Conference Showcases Excellence
Mon, 04/07/2025 - 2:19pmThe American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Gulf Coast Regional Student Conference, hosted by Mississippi State University, drew 14 universities from across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama for an exciting weekend of competition and collaboration under the newly designated Region 5.1. The event, held from March 6 to 9, 2025, was a dynamic showcase of student talent, resilience, and technical expertise.The student teams, which included 27 representatives from various institutions, demonstrated remarkable prowess across several competitions, with many earning top honors in highly competitive categories.
Timber Strong led the way with impressive results:
- 1st Place in Construction
- 3rd Place Overall
- Honorable Mention for Aesthetics
The Steel Bridge team achieved significant recognition, earning:
- 2nd Place in Stiffness
- 3rd Place in Structural Efficiency
The fun and challenging Concrete Cornhole competition also saw stellar performances:
- 1st Place in Tournament
- 2nd Place Overall
Beyond these, other notable achievements included:
- 1st Place in Mystery Fluid Mechanics
- 3rd Place in March Madness Free Throw
- 3rd Place in Water Resources PE Exam
- Honorable Mention in Construction Institute
One of the event’s most exciting moments came when the Concrete Beam team shattered the regional record with a 10-minute hold, ultimately finishing 4th overall. This remarkable feat demonstrated the team’s innovation and technical skills under pressure. In addition, the Daniel Mead Student Paper Competition saw one of the team’s projects secure 4th place out of 13 entries, while the Survey Team delivered a strong performance, further reinforcing the breadth of expertise among the student participants.
The weekend was a true testament to the hard work, dedication, and innovation of the students from Region 5.1. Their ability to work together, think critically, and solve complex problems under intense competition reflects the strength of ASCE’s future leaders in the civil engineering field. In all, the 2025 ASCE Gulf Coast Regional Student Conference not only showcased exceptional technical ability but also highlighted the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and resilience in the face of challenges.
