The Civil Engineering Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is proud to recognize Nick Paul Pontiff as the Student of the Semester for the Spring graduating class. Nick, who maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA, has distinguished himself through exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to both professional development and community service. Over the course of seven consecutive semesters from Fall 2022 through Fall 2025 he earned placement on the President’s List while also receiving multiple prestigious scholarships, including the Maurice & Rosalie Bienvenu Memorial Endowed First Generation Scholarship in Engineering and the Fugro Chance Inc. Civil Engineering Endowed Scholarship.

In Spring 2025, Nick was inducted into the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honors Society, where he now serves as President. His leadership extends across numerous student organizations, including the UL ASCE Student Chapter and UL ITE Student Chapter, where he has taken on active and influential roles. His involvement in competitive and hands-on engineering activities such as Timber Strong, Concrete Canoe, and Will-it-Tornado reflects both his technical ability and enthusiasm for applied learning.

Beyond academics, Nick has demonstrated a strong commitment to service. He volunteered locally in Lafayette, educating youth about aviation infrastructure, and contributed to environmental preservation efforts along Louisiana’s coastline in Grand Isle. His professional experience further reinforces his readiness to enter the engineering field. Through internships with Fenstermaker and RS&H, Pontiff gained experience working with municipalities, contributing to flood risk management initiatives, and conducting infrastructure assessments. Currently working with Neu Company, he has developed structural design expertise and proficiency with industry-standard engineering software. As a team lead for the Spring 2026 Civil and Environmental Senior Design Project, Pontiff has helped guide the design of a maintenance facility for the Sabine Parish Landfill Expansion an experience that blends technical design, planning, and leadership.
Reflecting on his time as a student, Pontiff emphasized the deeper value of his education: “My experience at UL Lafayette has taught me more than just engineering concepts it’s taught me how to approach problems, break them down, and build solutions from the ground up.” Nick’s ability to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence, structure, and persistence reflects the core mission of the Civil Engineering program.

After graduation, Pontiff plans to begin his career as an Engineer Intern (EI), having already passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. He intends to pursue licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) while gaining experience in structural or aviation-focused engineering. With long-term goals that include leadership, mentorship, and potentially returning to academia, he is well-positioned to make a lasting impact on the profession.
The department proudly congratulates Nick Paul Pontiff on this well-earned recognition and looks forward to seeing his continued success in the field of civil engineering.
