UL Civil Engineering Graduate Student Atif Khan Wins 3MT® Competition
Wed, 02/26/2025 - 9:55amThe winner of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition is Atif Khan, a graduate student studying civil engineering. Khan's talk, "Green Construction Materials from Sugarcane By-products," highlighted his innovative research on environmentally friendly construction materials made from agricultural byproducts. Both the judges and audience alike were impressed by his ability to condense intricate research into a succinct, captivating three-minute presentation. Atif said about his victory, "This has been a great honor and I am deeply grateful to my advisor, Dr. Jamal Khattak, for his guidance and support."
The top 10 finalists from each of the University's colleges participated in the competition. With just one static slide to back up their presentation, participants were tasked with explaining their research in an accessible way to a non-specialist panel. Khan's outstanding research presentation earned him the $600 top prize for his
captivating performance.
As the University's 3MT® champion, Atif will advance to the regional competition at the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools (CSGS) Annual Meeting, which will take place in Dallas, Texas, from March 19–21, 2025. He will compete against eminent graduate students from universities throughout the southern United States at this event, offering him an opportunity to showcase his research to a broader audience. A $1,000 first prize is up for grabs in the CSGS 3MT® competition, and runners-up and People's Choice winners will also get prizes.
