Undergraduate Computer Lab
Graduate Study Lab:
Graduate students have special needs and often spend long hours working
on projects. Two rooms have been dedicated to providing an environment
conducive to this type of work. These rooms contain computers, a printer, and
have been subdivided into cubicles for individual study. Software
applications installed on these computers are dependent on the students who
are using them.
Design Laboratory:
This facility was created for our students to have a computer lab, which
would support many advance applications used in Civil Engineering. This
facility is available to all students and is open 24 hours per day. There are
several printers and plotters in the Computer Design Laboratory as well as a
flatbed scanner.Software available in the Computer Design Laboratory
includes:
- Arcview : A GIS (Geographical Information Systems package
complete with some advanced applications
- Microstation J: A Civil Engineering site design and CAD
package
- Geopak : Written for Microstation J, this software contains Civil
Engineering applications in the areas of Surveying, Roadway Design, Bridge
Design, Site Development,and Hydrology.
- Trafficware: Includes Simtraffic and Synchro packages for use in
Traffic
Analysis.
- STADD: For designing and analyzing structural systems such
as buildings and bridges.
CASTS Computational:
The CASTS lab is state of the art in computational capability. There is
a Windows 2000 Server complete with plenty of horsepower for even the most
demanding jobs. Nine Windows Workstations operate under this server. These
computers are supported with three printers and a large format plotter. This
facility is open twenty-four hours per day year round, although access is
limited to students and staff associated with projects for CASTS.
Software facilities and Hardware available in the CASTS Laboratory include:
- MapInfo: A Civil Engineering site design and CAD package
- Geopak: Industry leader in map producing software
- TransCAD: A GIS-T software package
- Pathfinder Office: Published by Trimble, this software
works in conjunction with GPS units for data processing and analysis.
- Oracle Server: A powerful database
- Arcview: A GIS (Geographical Information Systems) package
complete with some advanced applications
- HCS-3: Highway Capacity Software for pavement design.
- Server: Dual pentium 233 MHZ processor running Windows NT
4.0 Server with 256 MB RAM memory, 28 GB hard disk space available including
20 GB RAID-type external drive system, and 28 GB external auto-loading tape
backup system with automated scheduling software.
- Workstations:
- Five (5) each, Dell GX110 450 MHZ pentium computers running Windows
NT 4.0 Workstation with 256 MB RAM memory, 10 GB hard disk, internal zip
drive Read/Write CD device, and 21" High resolution monitors
- Four (4) each, Micron MME 233 MHZ pentium computes running Windows
NT 4.0 Workstation with 128 MB RAM memory, 10 GB hard disk, internal zip
drive, CD ROM, and 17" High resolution monitors
- Printing/Plotting Capabilities:
- One (1) Hewlett Packard model HP25000 large format plotter with 96
MB RAM memory
- One (1) Hewlett Packard Laserjet 4000 printer with 32 MB RAM memory
- One (1) Hewlett Packard DeskJet 1120C printer
- One (1) Hewlett Packard Color Laserjet 5 printer
- Networking Capabilities:
- All computers are networked via a 24 port 3COM Smartstack II
Ethernet switch.
- All printers/plotters are networked to this switch using Hewlett
Packard Jet Direct Print Servers.
Undergraduate Computer Lab:
There are 15 high-powered computers in this facility and it is available
to every civil engineering student in the department. Many software packages
are taught in this laboratory during formal class sessions. Also, homework
and research for student projects are usually done in this facility.
Software available in the Undergraduate Computer Laboratory include:
- Microstation J: A Civil Engineering site design and CAD
package
- Geopak 98: Written for Microstation J, this software contains
Civil Engineering applications in the areas of Surveying, Roadway
Design, Bridge Design, Site Development, and Hydrology
- Tecplot:A 3D package for graphically analyzing and processing
data.
- Digital Visual Studio: For writing and fixing programs
written in any Basic language.
- Digital Visual Fortran: Used to write and compile the
programs written in Fortran.
- Microsoft C++ :Compiler for C++ language
- Winestimator: Software for demonstrating the contracting
process.Includes the popular RS Means database for accessing pricing
information.
- PCA Design Programs: Written by the Portland Cement
Association, this software is used to aid in the design of concrete
columns, flooring systems, slabs, etc.
- FE Review: An interactive tutorial used to prepare Civil
Engineers for the EI Exam.
- HDM-4: Pavement design software that looks at project
management
- Micorsoft Office 2000: Includes word processing, spreadsheet,
data basing, and photo editing software.
